PNG to JPG

Turn a PNG image into a JPG in seconds. Choose the quality and the color that replaces transparent areas, check the preview and download the result.

How to convert PNG to JPG

  1. Drag a PNG into the box or choose it from your device. You can also paste an image.
  2. Choose the background color for transparent areas (white by default) and the JPG quality.
  3. Compare the JPG with the original PNG and download it.

What happens to transparency

JPG can’t store transparency: every pixel has a solid color. When a PNG has transparent or semi-transparent areas, they are blended with the background color you choose. White is the default because it matches most documents and web pages, but you can pick any color, like the background of the page where the image will go.

Some converters turn transparent areas black, because that’s what an empty canvas becomes when saved as JPG. Here the background is always painted first.

When to use JPG and when to keep PNG

  • JPG is best for photos and images with gradients, where it’s usually much smaller than PNG.
  • PNG is better for logos, icons, screenshots and text: it keeps sharp edges and flat colors, and it’s often smaller for that kind of image.
  • If you need transparency, keep the PNG or use WebP, which supports it.
  • A JPG loses a little quality every time it’s saved, so keep your original PNG if you’ll edit the image again.

Choosing the quality

The default of 90 keeps text and edges clean with a reasonable file size. For photos, 75 to 85 usually looks the same on screen and is noticeably smaller. Below 60, blocks and halos start to show around edges.

Your images never leave your device

The conversion happens in your browser, on your device. Your PNG is not uploaded to our servers or stored anywhere: when you close the page, it’s gone.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my JPG bigger than the PNG?

PNG compresses flat colors very well, so logos, icons and screenshots are often smaller as PNG. JPG wins with photos. If the JPG is bigger, lower the quality or keep the PNG.

Will the image lose quality?

JPG compresses with some loss, but at high quality the difference is hard to see. The size in pixels doesn’t change: the JPG has exactly the same width and height.

Can I keep the transparency?

Not in a JPG, because the format doesn’t support it. Transparent areas are filled with the background color. To keep transparency, use PNG or WebP.

Can I convert several PNG files at once?

The converter handles one image at a time: convert it, download it and choose the next one.

What happens with animated PNGs?

JPG images can’t move, so only the first frame is converted.
